Hosted aboard Dutch Apple Cruises, festivities included a buffet dinner, bar, nostalgia from the past 60 years and a brief business meeting to induct the 2007 Board of Directors. Ken Moore, of Ken Moore Associates, spoke to us about the “Performance Scorecard”. In our businesses and organizations, score is often kept by our company’s bottom line, or our control of expenses. Ken walked us through a variety of annual reports, to see how HR might be contributing to the company’s performance scorecard.

Our March meeting was devoted to 1 ½ hour panel discussion with our CEOs and, this year, with their respective HR leaders. As always, we were honored that the CEOs took time out of their busy schedule to share their thoughts with us. It was a value added pleasure to also hear their HR leaders provide their perspective to the questions. Our participants are listed with their photos. Many thanks to all six for an exciting and informative panel discussion representing 3 distinct organizations, with 3 distinct purposes.

John Bagyi, Esq., SPHR and Diane Lustenader, SPHR, GPHR, CCP co-presented a program on Conducting Internal Investigations, legally and effectively. As usual, they both did a great job in highlighting the information that we need to know as HR professionals. If nothing else, we should all remember – DO IT NOW! And document, document, document! Thanks for a very informative and timely session. Unfortunately, the speaker photos didn’t come out for the website.

Our speaker for both the afternoon and evening programs was Nicholas J. D’Ambrosio, Jr., of Bond, Schoeneck & King, PLLC. Nick spent 2 hours in the afternoon providing the condensed version of Developments in Employment & Labor Law in 2004. A very clear, concise presentation. Imagine, a lawyer who is concise. For the dinner program, Nick presented a fantastic and very humorous multi-media program about Bizarre Employment Cases. Imagine, a lawyer who is concise and has a great sense of humor. A tough assignment to keep our interest for both the afternoon and evening programs. Job well done! Thanks Nick!

Employee Assistance Programs are valuable services offered to individuals and families and increasingly popular initiatives to benefit company employees. Patricia Spataro’s presentation “Beyond the Basics: A Look at the Depth and the Breadth of EAP Services” provided a great overview of core EAP services including counseling, management consultation and training. She also reviewed the role of EAPs in the “Stable Table” concept, and how HR is integrated into this philosophy. Perhaps the most important point Pat made was the impact of EAP services in the workplace, as they relate to productivity, management support, intervention and training. Well done Pat, and thank you.

"We were both educated and entertained by our guest speaker, Joan M. Hebert, principal of Hebert Performance Training. Joan helped us to learn through this experiential program how to: present our best personal self, communicate with more ease, use visual aids, manage diverse and difficult participants, utilize adult learning principles, deliver powerful presentations, and many other critical components of being a more dynamic and effective presenter. What a clever idea to divide 125 people into four different working groups. A difficult task handled very effectively. Thanks Joan."

The Best Conference & Exposition Yet! -- Photo Gallery
Better than the national SHRM conference. Better than the NYSHRM conference. Without a doubt, if you couldn’t attend this year’s CRHRA conference, you missed the BEST of the BEST! The day long conference and exposition kicked off with a dynamic presentation by Michael W. Mercer, Ph.D. on “Turning your HR Department into a Profit Center”. All six concurrent sessions that followed ranged from excellent to superb. If you missed any of the sessions, or the keynote, there remain a limited number of conference CD’s which can be purchased by contacting Brian Buff at CRHRA. Kudos also go to all of the vendors that combined to make the exposition hall an information center and wonderful social experience. As special recognition for their support of CRHRA, please click here to see the entire list of vendors that attended the exposition. Special thanks to everyone who helped to make the conference a HUGE SUCCESS!!
March Meeting - CEO Panel -- Photo Gallery
We always expect great things from our CEO’s, and our CEO panel more than met our great expectations. Many thanks to the panel: Bruce Beaudette, President/CEO pf Sunmark Federal Credit Union; Joan R. Hayner, CEO of CapitalCare Medical Group; Ed Mitzen, CEO of Palio Communications; and Diana Jones Ritter, NYS Executive Deputy Controller of the NYS Comptroller. Each panelist brought a slightly different perspective on want they want from their Human Resources staff. However, one theme clearly resounded – HR has to be able to fully support the needs of the business. And we will.

We were honored to have Mike Aitken, from SHRM national, department of government affairs, give us a great update on Federal legislation initiatives. Mike highlighted information about: FLSA; Fair & Accurate Credit Transactions Act; Minimum Wage Act; Genetic Information Nondiscrimination; Pension Funding Equity Act; and others. You can find Mike’s complete presentation in the “Members Only” section. We all agreed that we don’t know how Mike keeps up with all of the legislation that affects us as HR professionals, but he sure knows it all! Thanks Mike.

Our January meeting started with a “show and tell” about the new CRHRA website, during dinner. Tracy Spargo, PHR, Michele Wilkes-Hawkins, SPHR, and Kelly Conroy provided an overview of the new features and changes. Our speaker, Mr. Kevin P. Neary, Chief of Operations for NY SEMO, did a great job of taking a normally very dry topic, Emergency Preparedness for Your Company, and turning it into a light and learning experience. Well done Kevin!
December Holiday Luncheon Meeting
Everyone was in a festive holiday mood, for a great Luncheon Meeting. The two highlights of the meeting were the presentation of the student chapter members who received their multi-campus chapter charter, and of course, the informative presentation by Bob Provost on a Strategic Perspective of the Capital Region. Now we all know what nanotechnology is, or do we? (There were no additional photos taken at this meeting.)
